Our Story

Watoto Pre-School provides exceptional services that are personalised to the needs of individual children and delivered in a ‘home from home’ environment that is welcoming, inclusive and safe.

We are constantly building on our reputation as a Pre-School delivering high quality through;

  • Partnership working with parents, external professionals and wider communities.

  • Continuous evaluation and improvements to our services to ensure we are meeting the needs of our children and demand for nursery education and childcare.

Watoto Pre-School (formerly known as Burngreave Community Childcare Project) was established 20 years ago, in 1996, by local parents who identified a gap in the market for quality pre-school education and childcare that enabled them to take up training and employment opportunities and supported their children’s all round development in readiness for school. The vision was to create the very best services in the city.

Originally we started life as the Burngreave Community Childcare Project, operating from the ground floor of 68 Burngreave Road in Sheffield. In 2000 the overwhelming demand for places prompted the decision to expand and relocate to the ground floor of the Black Women’s Resource Centre with a new name BWRC Children’s Projects. Two years later the training arm of BWRC was closed and the children’s Project expanded into the 1st floor, creating additional childcare places in the area.

We relocated again in 2008 to our current building. Following consultation with parents, we changed our name again to Watoto Pre-School. This relocation enabled a 50% increase in the number of children taking up our services and enabling us to  support a greater number of parents to access training, employment opportunities and or pursue other interests.
